Stage 3
Descent Through the Gods’ Forest

Mount Olympus

After conquering the heights of Olympus, today’s stage offers a completely different kind of magic — a dramatic descent through the heart of the Mount Olympus National Park, along one of the most iconic trails in Greece: the European Trail E4. It is the soft descent after the storm, the time to absorb what you have just accomplished, and to feel part of something ancient, timeless, and truly mythical.

The route begins at Refuge Apostolidis and winds its way down the majestic flanks of the mountain, through ancient pine and fir forests, and crystal-clear alpine springs. You will feel as though you are descending from the heavens into a hidden world — a sacred forest once believed to be walked by gods.

One of the most breathtaking sections of the route is the crossing of the Zonaria, the legendary narrow path that cuts across the sheer slopes of Olympus. This is one of the most visually striking points of the race — a stone balcony carved into the mountain, offering staggering views over the Ennipeas Gorge below.

While dramatic in appearance, rest assured: the Zonaria is a well-maintained and safe trail, walked every summer by thousands of hikers of all levels. With its solid footing and stable width, it poses no technical danger, only unforgettable views and raw inspiration.

The descent continues through lush forests, echoing with birdsong and flowing water, eventually passing near the Monastery of Saint Dionysios — a spiritual landmark nestled in the wilderness. Built in the 16th century, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, it stands as a symbol of endurance, solitude, and connection to the divine.

From there, you enter the Ennipeas Gorge, one of the most beautiful natural corridors in Greece, running beside waterfalls, wooden bridges, and steep limestone walls, before finally reaching the day’s destination: the Stavros Refuge, tucked peacefully in the lower slopes of Olympus.

Here a surprise awaits: a charming wooden balcony structure, built like a mountain hut lookout, rewarding you not only with breathtaking panoramic views over the Aegean Sea, but with something more earthly — fresh drinks and local snacks, served in the open air. After such a long and soul-stirring descent, this moment of refreshment, suspended between sky and sea, becomes a moment of pure grace.

And as if that were not enough, you will then be transferred back to your beachfront hotel in Platamonas. With crystal-clear waters and a pool, it is the perfect setting for deep recovery — body and soul — after the unforgettable Olympus challenge.
